Andrew Leigh and Christine Neill – authors of Do Gun Buybacks Save Lives?

New Labor Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh and Dr Christine Neill from the Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada are of the belief that the 1996 and 2002 firearm buy-backs in Australia have contributed to a direct reduction in suicide rates by firearm of 74 per cent.

However, their report Do Gun Buybacks Save Lives? Evidence from Panel Data fails to recognise that substitution of the method used to carry out suicide deaths exists.

Their report also completely ignores the independent report The Australian Firearms Buyback and Its Effects on Gun Deaths by Wang-Sheng Lee and Sandy Suardi from The University of Melbourne.
