National Party adopts positive firearms policy

The National Party has adopted a policy of engagement before emotion when it comes to firearm laws at its federal conference held in Canberra over the weekend. The motion, “that this federal conference acknowledges the National Firearms Agreement and states that no further restrictions changes should be added to it without compelling evidence and discussions with stakeholders”, was carried.

The SSAA welcomes this evidence-based approach to firearms laws but cautions against making sweeping statements supporting the NFA, which has had many unintended consequences and overreach, such as banning firearms based on appearance, which serves no public safety purpose. The NFA has also severely impinged on legitimate firearm owners while doing nothing to curb criminal misuse or address the illicit firearms market.
