Australian Arms Auctions Pty Ltd (AAA) is the largest specialist auction house for antique and sporting arms, militaria, edged weapons and associated items in Australia. Established in 1993, it has an unparalleled reputation for offering some of the finest quality firearms in the country. AAA also delivers a full range of services to collectors, estates, government departments and museums.
The co-directors of AAA are Roly Martyn and Rob Lansell. Roly has been a collector for more than 40 years with a particular interest in Australian marked and issued arms and militaria from the period 1800 to 1900. This includes police- and gaol-issue firearms, those used by volunteers and from regiments of the British Army that served in Australia. Rob also has a lifetime interest in firearms and is a third-generation collector. Apart from AAA, both men have private businesses involving firearms. Roly is the principal of Tower Arms Pty Ltd, while Rob runs Best Guns Australia, dealing primarily in English-made double guns and rifles.
AAA holds two auctions per year in May and October, both of which are eagerly anticipated by collectors. Each is preceded by a comprehensive catalogue describing anywhere from 600 to 1100 lots, usually with around 24 pages of color photographs including the covers. The diversity of items on offer is always fascinating and it’s hard not to be impressed by just how many different strands there are to firearms and arms collecting. Whatever your personal collecting or firearms interests may be, there’s a good chance there will be something in the catalogue to pique your interest.
The next AAA auction (#47) will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2016, in Melbourne. In the lead-up to that event, AAA supplied Australian Shooter with some photographs and descriptions of a number of firearms that will be offered for sale, including some wonderful and unusual flintlock firearms from the Doug Mills collection.
