Farmers gain access to new pest management tool

Queensland primary producers will have an extra tool in the fight against pest animals through an innovative new program that has gained the support of Queensland peak producer advocacy group AgForce.

The SSAA Farmer Assist program will provide landholders and managers access to a database of qualified SSAA members with program-accredited shooting skills to assist in on-property pest animal control.

SSAA Farmer Assist Coordinator Matt Godson said the online tool was developed to provide farmers with a free, simple and fast service for dealing with problem wildlife.

“We have worked closely with farmers to develop a tool which is both useful and practical,” he said.

Michael Allpass, Sheep and Wool Policy Director, AgForce Queensland, said the SSAA Farmer Assist program was a responsible form of pest animal control that would alleviate financial pressure on many of the state’s rural businesses.

“Pest animals cost agriculture and associated industries tens of millions of dollars annually and in many regions are crippling primary production,” Mr Allpass said.

“This program is a means of engaging people who are qualified and accredited to help in pest mitigation and to achieve strong animal welfare, production and economic outcomes.”

All SSAA members participating in this program have achieved a professional standard of marksmanship and will adhere to a strict code of practice that takes legislative requirements and animal welfare into account.
