Day 3 wrap-up at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

On day three of the shooting sports, Australia’s Emma Cox and Gaye Shale finished in sixth and seventh place respectively in the women’s Double Trap. The event was won by Charlotte Kerwood of England. The silver medal went to Shreyasi Singh of India, while England’s Rachel Parish took the bronze medal.

Tom Turner finished fourth in the men’s Double Trap after the semi-final. Turner had qualified for the six-person semi-final in sixth place on 128 points. Australian veteran Russell Mark finished the qualifying round in 10th place on 123 points. The gold medal went to Steven Scott of England, with countryman Matthew French picking up silver. India’s Asab Mohd collected bronze.

James Corbett and Geoff Grenfell are currently still involved in the individual Full Bore competition. The duo finished fourth in the Full Bore pairs.

Michael Diamond will be hoping to add to Australia’s Commonwealth Games medal tally in the shooting arena when he opens his campaign in the single Trap qualifying rounds at Carnoustie tomorrow. Forty-two-year-old Diamond is approaching the veteran stage of his career, but intends to carry on for as long as he can. He definitely has the next Olympics Games in Rio on his agenda. But first, it’s down to business in Scotland, where he will be chasing his fifth straight Commonwealth Games gold medal and inevitably start as favourite for his discipline. The individual Trap is Diamond’s only event at the Games, after organisers ditched the teams’ categories. Diamond and fellow Australian Adam Vella had won the Trap team gold at the past three Games. Looming as a big threat to the Aussie hopefuls is India’s Manavjit Singh Sadhu, who pushed out Diamond to second spot at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Tuscon, Arizona, in April.

At the end of day three in the shooting, India tops the medal table with three gold, five silver and one bronze. In second spot comes England, thanks to three gold, one silver and four bronze. Australia is nestled in third position with two gold and a bronze medal. Cyprus has tallied a gold medal and a bronze to edge ahead of Singapore, who lies fifth with one gold medal.
