Morrison Government response to SSAA

The Morrison Government recognises that may Australian’s lawfully and responsibly participate in a wide range of shooting activities, including recreational shooting. The licensing, possession and use of firearms within Australia is a matter for the states and territories, with the Commonwealth responsible for the importation of firearms into Australia.

The Morrison Government will work closely with states and territories to ensure that national firearms regulations balance public safety interests with the interests of those with a genuine reason and need to have access to firearms.

The Morrison Government will continue to explore options to streamline regulations and reduce the regulatory burden on importers, while ensuring firearms are not able to be accessed for unlawful reasons.

The Morrison Government will work closely with states and territories to maintain a consistent national approach to the management of firearms, supported by effective information sharing systems and strong laws to deter the criminal use of firearms.
