SSAA WA State Muzzleloading Championships – Part 1

The weekend of March 22 and 23 saw 36 assorted muzzleloaders converge on the Perth Muzzle Loading Club for Part 1 of this year’s Western Australian Muzzleloading State Titles. It was the last week end of a long hot summer, with the temperature on both days edging towards the mid 30s and hardly any wind to upset the shooters.

Part 1 of the WA Championships covers pistols, revolvers, muskets, shotguns and cannon, with three types of ignition: matchlock, flintlock and percussion. Breechloading black powder rifles were also shot for the first time using specialised American targets.

For a change, the hot favourites did not sweep all before them and there was a good sprinkling of the medals with new hotshots and many shooters winning their first state medals.

The star of the weekend was Kerwin Bee with five gold medals, followed by Geoff Price and Barry Duckett with four gold each. Three shooters, David Cocking, Kevin Brice and first-time winner Jonathan Harris, each won three gold medals.

Saturday was full on with 11 events that went according to plan from 8am until just before 5pm. Sunday was a little bit different as the four breechloading black powder rifle events took far longer than expected. After an excellent barbecue and with the two shotgun events still to be shot, most of the shooters were verging on shattered (or at least suitably tired) and the conditions were getting rather hot. It was therefore unanimously decided to postpone the shotgun events until the following Saturday morning, which were completed in far less trying conditions.

Some very good scores were posted overall, but the most amazing result was in the breechloading rifle event, 200m Bench Rest, where there was just one point between first and second, and another one point between second and third. Hotshot Justen McGowan only managed a solitary gold, but took away four silvers and six bronze medals. Shotgun favourite Leo Laden crashed to be third in both the percussion and flintlock events.

Thank you to Peter Norgard and Rick Denniston who were chief range officers, and to Jonathan Harris for all his scoring and other computer magic. Other helpers included Frank Della and Derek Clamesia. Thank you everyone for yet another very successful State Titles.
