SSAA NSW State Championships for Muzzleloading Shotguns and Black Powder Cannons

SSAA Bathurst held a major shoot for the first time when it hosted the SSAA New South Wales State Championships for Muzzleloading Shotguns and Black Powder Cannons over the weekend of September 17 and 18, 2016.

Though a relatively small number of shooters made the trip, the weekend was highly enjoyable. Saturday started with the Caplock MLAIC Trap event where Ian Hanlon led the way to first place, beating twin brother Guy, with Glenn Barnsley third. The Flintlock MLAIC Trap needed a shoot-off to determine the winner, with Ian eventually prevailing over Glenn Barnsley and Barrie Pennings taking third spot.

Saturday afternoon saw the inaugural running of Black Powder Cannons in a NSW State Championship. The first distance, shot at 25m, proved to be a hard-fought match, with Peter Burgess putting in a new personal best to come out on top (the first time he has finished top three in any Cannon competition). Shayne Barnsley and Glenn Barnsley were left to tussle for the minor placing, with Glenn just getting the edge over his son.

In the 50m Cannon event, Glenn and Peter finished with the same score, but Glenn notched the win on countback. Pushing the distance out to 100m proved too much for most of the field, with only Glenn and Shayne Barnsley landing shots on their targets. Glenn sealed success as his shots landed in the scoring zone. Saturday night saw all participants and helpers head into Bathurst and enjoy dinner and drinks together.

Sunday morning brought with it wet weather. With rain starting out light, a reduced Caplock Field Shotgun event was held initially in the hope that the weather would later clear. Despite dealing with some back discomfort, Glenn Barnsley claimed first place, just ahead of Barrie Pennings and Frank Colzato. Unfortunately, the rain started to increase as the Flintlock Field Shotgun got underway. In wet conditions, Glenn again finished on top with a shoot-off for second place going the way of Shayne Barnsley over Ian Hanlon.

In a clean sweep of the Aggregates, Glenn Barnsley triumphed in the Caplock Shotgun, Flintlock Shotgun, Top Gun and Cannon Aggregates, so becoming the winner of the Brass Monkey Trophy in the inaugural Cannon Aggregate. Patricia Hanlon ended up as the leading scorer in the Ladies Aggregate.
