Queensland Firearms Licensing
Below you will see some easy-to-follow information on obtaining either your handgun or rifle license in the State of Queensland. Contact the Queensland Police Service for further information.
Rifle License (Category A & B)
Step 1
You need a genuine reason to obtain a Category A & B firearms licence in Queensland. The genuine reason can be either being a member of an approved shooting club, or having access to a suitable property where you can shoot with permission of the owner.
Step 2
There are several Registered Training Organisations in the State of Queensland who will assist you to register for the next available 11029 NAT course in Firearms and Weapons Safety. You will need to complete this as part of your training toward obtaining your firearm licence.
It is a requirement for all students to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) prior to commencing a firearm safety course – you can apply online usi.gov.au
SSAA Queensland Hunters & Shooters membership cards can take up to 4 weeks to arrive; proof of membership to an association is required to apply for a firearms licence, we suggest you join now.

Step 3
Once you have completed your firearm safety course with a Registered Training Organisation, you will receive in the mail your ‘Statement of Attainment’. This certificate is proof needed to show that you have successfully completed the Firearms and Weapon Safety course. You will need a copy of this statement to apply for a firearms licence. The Certificate of Attainment is valid for 12 months from the date on the certificate.
Step 4
You can apply online for your firearms licence at Queensland Police weapons licencing branch police.qld.gov.au and follow the instructions provided.
Step 5
Once your licence arrives, you can then make the exciting decision on which firearm best suits your requirements. Shooting has what is called Disciplines, as different types of shooting require different types of firearms. You will eventually be able to take part in the various Disciplines which will be offered by SSAA QHS which will allow you to then decide on the firearm you want. Once you have decided what discipline you are interested in, you can visit or call your local gun shop to make further enquires.
Handgun Licence (Category H)
Step 1
In Queensland the steps involved in obtaining a handgun licence is different to getting a Category A or B licence. Along with being a member of SSAA QHS you will also need to be a member of an approved pistol club. There are many approved pistol clubs in Queensland who have approved pistol sections.
