This week is National Farm Safety Week (Farmsafe Australia). This year’s theme being “Second Chances – Who Knows How Many You’ll Get?“, which shines a light on the near misses that happen every day on Australian farms, and the moments that could have ended very differently.
Accompanying the campaign is the release of the 2025 Safer Farms Report, which is sponsored by WFI, and provides a vital picture of on-farm harm over the past 18 months.
While this can be a sobering read, providing this information is intended to reduce injuries and fatalities in the agricultural sector, and supports the campaign’s call for action that if you’ve had a near miss on farm, don’t just move on; learn from it, share it safely, and use it to protect those around you.
As so many of our members live and work on farms, or visit them, it is critical that you and your families have every opportunity to be safe and stay safe.
Alongside the accident data, WFI Insurance has also outlined practical steps for managing rural crime, which remains a persistent issue for many Australian farmers.
Their rural crime recommendations focus on firearm security, livestock theft, and machinery protection and have highlighted that improper firearm storage increases the risk of theft. WFI advises that firearms should be kept in locked, compliant safes that are not visible from outside the property.
While many of you would already be aware of this, it’s a pertinent reminder to help you and your family stay safe.
