Southern Districts Rifle Club

Western Australia Club Profile

In May 1982, Andie Currie placed an advertisement in a local paper asking that anyone interested in forming a shooting club attend an informational meeting he had organised. More than 100 people responded to his ad and as a result a suitable sight for the Southern Districts Rifle Club just outside of Perth (SDRC) was found.

During the first year of operation, the SDRC had about 40 members. Throughout the years the Club has seen considerable growth. Currently, it has 130 financial members, including about 20 women and 15 junior shooters.

The Club has a 200m and a 50m range that have closed in shooting mounds with 27 shooting bays. The clubhouse features toilets, hot showers, a canteen and bar facilities. An additional 50m range complete with turning targets for handgun matches is currently in the works.

As well as catering to the needs of its members, the SDRC offers coaching services to local pony clubs that participate in tetrathlon events, which see participants competing in shooting, swimming, running and horse riding.

The Clubs also offers its facilities to Navy and Army cadets seeking marksman badges.

The Club is host to several events throughout the year. In March it successfully hosted the Western Action State Championships and in September was home to the 3P and Field Rifle State Championships. As well as operating registered matches for club championships, the SDRC holds a yearly centrefire tri-club shoot.

The current club champions are Veselko Talajic (senior) and Becky Ching (junior). Veselko was runner-up in the state championships hosted in September and Becky was the junior state champion.

Because the SDRC is close to Perth, it enjoys a fairly large membership. Disciplines shot at the Club include:

  • 3-Positional Rimfire and Centrefire Rifle
  • Field Rifle Rimfire and Centrefire
  • Field Pistol Rimfire and Centrefire
  • Western Action
  • Handgun Mandar and Revolver

The facility is set up in such a way that allows members to take part in rimfire rifle night shoots throughout the year, providing a fun, safe and unique shooting experience. Southern Districts Rifle Club is located south of Armadale on the Albany Highway.
