SSAA Springvale Branch
Victoria Club Profile
Within close proximity of Melbourne sits the Springvale Range, which is home to some 20,000 registered shooters. The range was built for the World Moving Target Championships in 1973 and is one of the few ranges in Australia with operating running boar ranges. Throughout the years, ranges for .22 calibre rimfire rifle and static and moving target pistol have been added.
Springvale boasts an active ‘special interest group’ and a strong junior contingent, including a significant number of girls. The Youth Training Program is strongly supported by Victorian SSAA president Sebastian Ziconne, the State Executive and other sub clubs, such as the Practical Shooters Little River Branch, which donates 100 per cent of required ammunition. Firearms have been supplied free of charge by Rob Harris, Boronia Firearms, Deer Stalkers and Fuller Firearms. The support from these groups enables a large number of enthusiastic young shooters to be trained in the safe handling of firearms every year.
Because of its central location, shooters from all around Melbourne come to Springvale to participate in a number of disciplines and sub-club activities. Aside from servicing the growing youth training scheme, Springvale is also home to the Sporting Shooters Pistol Club, the Military Pistol Club and the various moving target, practical rifle, air rifle, rimfire and centrefire .22 rifle and pistol shooters. As the home of the Sporting Shooters Pistol Club Vic, a full range of pistol matches are shot, including action match, service match, short barrel and novelty shoots.
While there are no camping facilities at Springvale, the range does provide its members with a spacious clubhouse and a bistro/bar that is capable of seating 40 members.
With the recent introduction of a new range management committee, Springvale is due to receive a bit of an upgrade. Members will see improved access ramps, bench rests for general rifle shooting installed and the completion of a new pistol range, which is currently being undertaken by the Sporting Shooters Pistol Club.
Springvale is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5-9pm, Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm.
Lessons for new or interested shooters are available on Saturday mornings at the range if booked in with the state office.
