Victoria Club Profile

A new year means different things to different people. To the members the SSAA Camperdown Range in Pomborneit, Victoria, 2002 means the installation of a set of lights, which will allow members of the club to participate in night shooting.

The Camperdown Range is home to about 170 shooters, with 30 per cent of those being women and juniors. Promoting a family atmosphere, the club offers a number of different styles of shooting that cater to all ages and abilities. There is a 600m centrefire range, a field style shotgun range, and a 50mx80m range that is accredited for pistol shooting of any calibre, centrefire rifle of pistol calibre, shotgun and black powder shooting. As half of the shooting lines are under cover, the ranges are full of activity even during periods of inclement weather.

Camperdown's facilities, which also include a storage shed, toilets and a new clubroom, are situated among 100 acres of natural bush land owned by the SSAA. In the near future, the club hopes to add a Down the Line shotgun range, a barbeque area, a centrefire rifle clubroom and an indoor air pistol range. With time, continual upgrades and improvements will also be made.

Not only does the range appeal to shooters in the area, it also appeals to the local fire brigade, which uses the property for specialised fire-fighting training. An archery group has also expressed interest in utilising the vacant areas of the range.

The Camperdown Branch was formed in 1996. A meeting of 40 like-minded shooters saw the election of a club president and committee and eight years later, membership and local support for the club has increased significantly. Anyone interested in shooting is invited to the range, which is open every weekend. Members are more than happy to show you around and answer any questions you might have about the shooting sports.
