Tasmania Club Profile

Tasmanian Deerstalkers was formed in November 1967 at Broadmarsh, with George Pelham serving as first president. Two years later, the first SSAA (Tas) branch was formed and club activities were conducted at the Deerstalkers’ range at Broadmarsh. Levendale’s present club president, Terry Hill, was the inaugural SSAA (Tas) president. History has somewhat repeated itself, as 30 years later the Tasmanian Deerstalkers became a branch of the SSAA (Tas).

Originally, Levendale had about 300 members, but today there are about 100, with 12 juniors and eight ladies competing regularly. Range activities include pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting, including silhouette field rifle, benchrest and sporting clay events. The club has leased land for hunting and conservation at Arthur’s Lake and Lake Echo. This is in co-operation with Forestry Tasmania and the Hydro Electric Commission. Spotlighting permits are available for paid-up members.

Levendale is currently upgrading the range facilities to a national standard, which will enable them to host prominent shooting events in the future. The upgrades include an extension of the pistol and rifle ranges and expansion of the car park. A container for additional equipment storage has also been added.

The club has provided shooting facilities for the Police Youth and Citizens Club and junior air rifle target events in the past. Unfortunately, due to insurance obstacles, these are not continuing activities; however, members hope to overcome the obstacles and renew their involvement in these areas in the future.

Club members are actively involved in state council meetings and, through the State Forest Hunters Committee, they aid non-club members whenever possible. The range is open to other SSAA club financial members and is available for charity fundraisers.

The clubhouse and ranges, featuring picturesque scenery in a tranquil bush environment, are situated at 100 Kelly’s Road Levendale in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania.

Shoots are conducted on the first Sunday of every month.
