SSAA Moonta Branch
South Australia Club Profile
Shooters frequenting the beautiful Yorke Peninsula in South Australia may wish to take their firearms along and visit the SSAA Moonta Club, which is situated just 5km from Moonta on the Moonta to Arthurton Road.
The club has three ranges, a clubhouse, toilets and a camping area. The main range is 200m and both the Pistol and Rimfire/Silhouette/3P ranges are 100m. Thirteen different disciplines can be shot at the range, including IHMSA, ISSF Pistol, Air Pistol/Rifle (indoors), Lever Action Rifle, Black Powder, Centrefire, Rimfire and Air Silhouette, Field Rifle (Rimfire and Centrefire), Benchrest and 3P, 2P and 4P. Among the 65 members, Air Pistol, Lever Action Silhouette, Centrefire Silhouette and Handgun Silhouette have proved to be most popular. Events are staged four times per week, with Air Pistol at 7pm on Tuesdays, Air Rifle at 7pm on Fridays, and varying shoots on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The club held its first annual general meeting in 1980 and began with only six members. The first president was Ken Warren, who has since been made a life member of SSAA South Australia for his services to sports shooting. The current President is Tony Andrews, who has been in this position for more than 12 years.
The club has a proud history and looks forward to a promising future. Past shooting successes include Brenton Pollard and Brian Trenwith. Will Godward is currently shooting at an international level and is working towards representing Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Nathan Francis, one the club’s young members, has the skill and support to follow his dreams in his chosen Air Rifle discipline and has shot at state and national levels.
A major focus of the club is introducing young people to the sport and fostering their skills. There are four air rifles and two rimfire rifles available for visitors wishing to try their hand at the sport. Juniors may shoot from the age of 12 with individual supervision from a qualified range officer, and families are most welcome at the club.
