Situated two and a half hours from Brisbane in Darling Downs, it is surrounded by cypress pine trees, has access to a large dam which will cater for all sorts of water activities, and can accommodate every type of SSAA shooting discipline. Range facilities include:

  • Two skeet and down-the-line layouts, as well as areas for five-stand shotgun shooting.
  • A 1000-metre range
  • A 500-metre for centrefire silhouette
  • A general-purpose 200-metre range
  • A western action range (complete with buildings and facades)
  • A complete rendezvous range with extensions for cannon shooting

As well as being a fully-equipped shooting facility, Captains Mountain also has accommodation for 40 people, a large dining room with a television and video player, large commercial kitchen, large multi-purpose building, rope and obstacle course, camping areas with toilets and showers and areas for archery, volley ball and cricket. Plans for a tennis court, a basketball court and a swimming pool are also underway.

Home of the SSAA Queensland State Office, Captains Mountain has been and is host to a number of large shooting competitions such as the rendezvous national championships, western action national championships, Australian Regional Championships for the World Cup, five-stand national shotgun championships and various junior coaching clinics.

It is not just shooters that take advantage of this fabulous facility. Groups such as the Girl Guides and Scouts, Army and Army Reserve, SES and Millmerran Shire Council Rural Youth Worker also hold training or events at the complex.
