Keen shooters travelling through the centre of Australia would do well to check out the excellent SSAA range complex at Alice Springs.

In 1982, Alice Springs shooters were using a disused quarry as a range. Realising that this would not be a permanent fixture, they advertised in the local paper for expressions of interest to form a new SSAA branch in Alice Springs. Only eight shooters attended this meeting but a committee was formed and Tony Kay became the inaugural president of the branch. The initial membership was 16.

The current branch President, Robert Kittle, advises there are now 34 financial members including six juniors and three ladies. New membership is encouraged with the holding of open days, and a booth at the annual Alice Springs Sportfest. Free membership is offered to juniors, and the club hosts local scouts, and cadets from Saint Phillips College.

ange facilities are generous, with a 500m centrefire range, a 200m silhouette range, three newly constructed pistol ranges, DTL trap range (also suitable for muzzleloading shotgun events) and a full service clubhouse with a commercial standard kitchen and bar. Night shooting is catered for with adequate lighting. How’s that for a set-up?

Pistol shooters are well catered for too with competitions for ISSF, IPSC, SASS, IHMSA, Service and Blackpowder pistol. For the rifle shooters there is Field Rifle, NRA Rifle, 3P Rifle, Military Rifle and Blackpowder Rifle matches. There is Shotgun Trap available, and a Sporting Clays range soon to be completed.

Every second year SSAA Alice Springs hosts the Masters Games. They have also held the Muzzleloading National Titles, as well as the IHMSA Nationals and the IPSC State Title shoots. The range is also leased out to NT Police, Australian Army (Norforce), Correctional Services and NT Parks & Wildlife Service.

The range is situated at the end of Butler Road, about 13km south-west of Alice Springs.
