Officers from Organised Crime (Firearms Trafficking) have arrested a man in connection with the purchase of 42 firearms, including 22 handguns, worth an estimated $54,000.

Detective Chief Superintendent Peter Dein said police mounted a major operation two months ago in which the firearms were recovered. He said police from the Firearms Trafficking section of Crime Agencies arrested a 23-year-old man at Bankstown yesterday and charged him with 21 offences of purchasing unauthorised firearms.

Detective Chief Supt Dein said the man has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Bankstown Local Court on 13 December 2001.
