The ALP position on sporting handgun use

Office of the Leader of the Opposition
17 August 2001

Mr Gary Fleetwood
Special Projects

Dear Gary

Mr Beazley has asked that you convey to your membership the following position with regard to the regulation of pistol firearms and access to such weapons by sporting shooters and other law-abiding citizens.

Labor supports cracking down on the criminal use and criminal supply of handguns. Labor does not support cracking down on any regulated and lawful recreational and competitive pistol shooting, such as that currently undertaken in pistol clubs. Licenced members whom participate in club events at international, national, state and local levels need not be concerned therefore that they will be targeted in any measures to combat criminal use and supply of handguns. Labor's position is not about banning any law-abiding sport, but about making the community safer. That means tackling the criminals, not legitimate recreational shooters

Yours sincerely

Michael Pezzullo
Deputy Chief of Staff
