New gun laws on target

Statement issued by David Oldfield

“Whilst past gun laws have largely assaulted law abiding firearms owners, the most recent legislation in NSW is an appropriate attack on criminals – these new laws are on target.

The new legislation covers areas of illegal trafficking of firearms and parts including provisions for those within NSW conspiring with persons planning offences outside NSW.

Law abiding shooting enthusiasts should welcome these firearms amendments and criminals should be concerned – that is the effect gun laws must have. It is criminals who should have sleepless nights, not law abiding gun owners.

The gun buy back was an expensive and dismal failure as has been any targeting of the removal of guns from law abiding owners, be they competition shooters, hunters or farmers.

Statistics have clearly and consistently shown that enacting legislation that impacts law abiding gun owners has no effect on crime or the access to firearms by criminals.

We should all be reminded of the old adage, “outlaw guns and only outlaws will have them", as has been evident in Britain where the removal of all legal handguns has been followed by handgun crime going through the roof in all categories – murder, robbery, burglary and assault.

Good gun control is hitting the target, first time every time – everyone must accept it is criminals who are the target, they are the ones who should be in the crosshairs – these firearms amendments relating to trafficking recognise and act on that understanding.”
