NEWSREADER: Laws giving tougher sentences to criminals, more Police powers in Cabramatta and larger penalties for gun possession have been introduced to State Parliament.

The new Law and Order Bill stop prisoners with their files marked never to be released from getting out early. The Premier, Bob Carr says the most significant change is an automatic 14 year jail term for any criminal who uses a gun.

BOB CARR: I'm not going to see a condition of lawlessness in this state with people, criminals taking it for granted they can use hand guns. If they've got a handgun and it's found on them, bang, in jail, 14 years. That's how tough our law is getting.
