Subject: Media release from David Oldfield MLC
"On 1-5-2001 I issued a public challenge to Andrew Denton to substantiate the various nonsense claims he made on behalf of the 'so called' coalition for gun control. On 4-5-2001, I made it publicly clear that 2SM had offered a forum for that challenge/debate.
Despite the facsimiles to Mr Denton making him aware of the situation prior to each public announcement, I am yet to hear from the well known comedian * no Mr Denton, I have not been joking.
Although at this time, in the face of that challenge, Mr Denton has chosen to go very quiet on the issue, the debate will go ahead with or without Mr Denton * Mr Denton's nonsense will be factually discredited with or without his appearance.
At 2pm this Friday 11 May 2001 Grant Goldman will host the debate on his programme and Mr Denton is more than welcome * he really should be there.
While I am hopeful Mr Denton will still give it a go, it is understandable why he has chosen thus far not to attempt to defend that which is indefensible and we can only hope he now takes the sensible position of keeping his mouth shut the next firearms' issues are raised."
