The possession of firearms is not a right but a conditional privilege.

DEADLINE for comments 24 November 2000

1. Your firearm, your responsibility.

2. Know the laws that apply to firearms ownership, possession and use.

3. Community safety depends upon responsible firearm owners.

4. Undertake formal firearm safety training.

5. NEVER store firearms and ammunition together. Lock them away when not in use.

6. Do not allow unauthorised persons access to your firearms or ammunition.

7. When transporting firearms ensure that they are secure and unloaded. NEVER leave unsecured firearms unattended.

8. NEVER allow young children access to firearms or ammunition.

9. NEVER point a firearm, accidentally or in anger, at another person or in their vicinity.

10. Always ensure your firing zone is clear. Don't assume.

11. Only load a firearm immediately prior to its use.

12. Understand the operation of your firearm and keep it in good repair.

13. ENCOURAGE safe and responsible shooting practices among fellow firearm owners.

14. NEVER use a firearm when you are tired, stressed or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

15. Dispose of unwanted firearms correctly. Hand them into the police or sell them to a registered dealer.
