Cleveland: Ohio

After a heated debate leaders of the 8.4 million member United Methodist Church have agreed to push for laws banning handguns and assault weapons.

"This is important for our church," a spokesman Eric Alsgaard said.

"This allows us to go to Capitol Hill and approach Congress and the President and say handguns are a major source of concern for methodists."

The 800 -word resolution was passed 724 to 205. The church conference is held every four years.

However many methodists, especially from the rural areas, said they were dissapointed.

Lewis Tibbits said he believed many of the 200,000 members of the church in Michigan would be concerned. "I don't own a handgun and I never have... but it disturbs me that the church wants to disarm people," he said.
