NRA website Oz crime video

The Australian
22 March 2000

"The Australian" Newspaper 22/3/2000 reported on the Federal Attorney-General Mr Daryl Williams and his displeasure at the USA NRA web video which displayed facts about the crime rate in Australia since the gun buyback.

Mr Williams disputed statistics cited by the NRA in this video.

From 1996 - 1998 firearm related murders, attempted murders and manslaughter decreased. If however, you factor out the Port Arthur victims "spike" the results are in line with the usual statistical ebb and flow from year to year. In other words, the 'buy-back' scheme doesn't appear to have had any significant effect at all. However, a two year data set is way too short to try and draw any conclusions - despite Daryl Williams claims.

There are four issues raised by Attorney-General Daryl Williams where he claims that information on this NRA web video is inaccuarate.
