Federal Government reply no plans for "additional firearm controls"
Minister for Justice and Customs
11 January 2000
Office of the Minister for Justice and Customs
Ministerial Reference: 196315
Dear Mr <name removed>
I refer to your letter of 26 November 1999 to the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator the Hon Amanda Vanstone, regarding the Prime Minister’s recent comment at the recent Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting. The Minister has asked that I respond on her behalf.
I understand that you have also written to the Prime Minister on these issues and I have been advised that he will also be responding to your concerns.
The comments made by the Prime Minister were made in the context of the international trade in small arms. While the Government is committed to enforcing the comprehensive firearm controls implemented as a result of the National Firearm Agreement on 10 May 1996, it does not have any plans for the confiscation of legally held firearms or additional firearm controls.
I trust this information is helpful.
Yours sincerely
