ALL front-line police officers will undertake a four-day specialised training course to deal with the increasing number of high-risk callouts.
Police Commissioner Mal Hyde yesterday released details of the training program which will be mandatory for more than 2000 operational police from next month. It will include topics covering the policy on the use of force, conflict resolution, firearms and managing situations involving mental illnesses and high-speed chases.
The program was the result of a 12-month review to assess the need to upgrade police operational tactics in high-risk situations. There had been a 75 per cent rise in such cases, over the past four years, Mr Hyde said.
"Operational safety is a very important issue for police and the community, particularly when it involves the use of firearms.
"The environment is more violent and dangerous than it was some time ago. "Our aim is straight forward to safely manage all police operations."
