PRESENTER - JEREMY CORDEAUX.... Gary, I think you've waited the longest, here's the Premier. Hi.
CALLER - GARY.... Good morning, Jeremy. Good morning, Premier.
JOHN OLSEN.... Hello, Gary.
GARY.... Premier, I'm from Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, and of course the horrific news this morning of the shootings in Adelaide only indicates further to us that law enforcement must be focussed upon the illegal use of firearms.
OLSEN.... Yes.
GARY.... We currently have one of our representatives in Brescia, Italy, then moving on to Vienna to UN meetings which are being conducted to look at ways of identifying and marking firearms at the point of manufacture, in a way, to restrict the illicit movement of guns around the world and finally into our own domain. I would just like your comments on, again, the fact that it's not the law abiding, the licensed firearms owner, that should be targeted in these times, but those that blatantly go against the laws of the land and use guns in the manner in which we've seen this morning.
OLSEN.... Well, Gary, I think you rightly identify a distinction between legitimate law abiding gun owners who are in it for a sport.. and of course that sport leads to things like Commonwealth and Olympic Game [sic] competitions.. that is legitimate, that is lawful; there are however, as with all society, you.. you will get sections of society intent, for a variety of reasons, breaking the law, acting illegally, unlawfully, and it's clearly that area, Gary, that's got to be targeted. And the identification, the clamping down of [sic], having the resources to focus on them, is clearly where we're going to be giving some attention, and that's why, I think the Police Minister's initiative that he took.. oh, some time ago, I'm not quite sure, I think it was back a month or so ago.. in writing to the other Police Ministers, was to tackle those who aren't law abiding citizens.
