Dear Mr Shelton

I refer to your letter dated 11 March 1998 in relation to the 28 day waiting period for the acquisition of second and subsequent firearms as agreed to by all Australian Police Ministers in May 1996.

As you are aware, the Australian Labor Party stands by the resolutions of the Australian Police Ministers' Council, including the 28 day waiting period.

The APMC established a process for altering these resolutions and I note that neither the Victorian nor Queensland governments have complied with those procedures.

Until such time as that procedure has been complied with then the Labor Party believes that all governments should comply with those resolutions in full. The Labor Party supports the actions of the Federal Government in seeking to ensure compliance with those resolutions.

Yours sincerely
(signed)
NICK BOLKUS
