Letter on the Northern Territory Police requirements for hunting

Dear Sir;

I am writing in reply to your letter dated 19 May 1997 and I will reply in answer in point form to cover all the questions you have raised.

Requirements of international visitors bringing firearms temporarily into Australia

If the person arriving in the Northern Territory is the resident of another State or Territory of the Comonwealth the following applies:

  • For A and B Class firearms, where the person is residing in the N.T. temporarily and has a corresponding licence, there is no requirement except suitable access to shoot on land.

  • If the person wishes to attend an approved competition shoot and use a A, B, C or H Class firearm, the person needs to hold a corresponding licence. The proof to support this will be a letter of acceptance from the Territory Club at whcih they wish to shoot.

Recognition of foreign licence:

If the foreign country is not in the Commonwealth, the person will require a Temporary Permit, this is available through the Firearms Policy and Records Unit at a cost of $10. This permit is valid for 3 months. There is also the requirement to obtain an import permit, this is issued free of charge.

Travel interstate:

The conditions that apply are only to the Northern Territory. If the person wishes to travel interstate they should contact the Firearms Branch of the State to which they are proposing to travel and ascertain their requirements.

Use of Permit to Purchase interstate:

A permit issued is valid for use in the Northern Territory. This means that it is an option for interstate Dealer's as to whether they accept our permits from private individuals. It is strongly suggested that before a person decides to travel "south" to purchase a firearm on a N.T. permit, they must first make enquiries as to whether the permit will be accepted.

As to whether they are allowed to use the firearm interstate. It will depend on which state they are in and whether this state accepts our registration.

Reciprocal recognition:

  • I can only give the legal requirements as they relate to the N.T. as we accept recognition of all Territory and State Licences

I hope that this information will be of assistance.

Yours faithfully
(signed)
