Response from NSW Premier Bob Carr re his comments about handguns

NEWS RELEASE
Statement from the Premier on pistol regulations
18 April 1997

Reports that I will be conducting a complete review of regulations relating to pistol ownership are incorrect.

I made it clear my advice was that the sale and ownership of pistols have been well regulated for a long time.

What I said was that we would carefully listen to anyone arguing that the effectiveness of existing controls was flawed and react if they made a case.

In fact, pistol regulations in NSW were considered effective by the Commonwealth Government at the Australian Police Minister's Council on May 10, 1996.

They are consistent with national guidleines.

Pistol owners are required to establish a genuine reason for ownership of a pistol. These include sport or target shooting, business and employment, or collection.

In addition, special need must be established to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Police.

Pistols are subject to strict storage requirements, which include them being stored in a locked steel safe a a type approved by the Commisisoner of Police. Ammunition must be stored separately.
