Tasmania allows dealers to buy unregistered firearms

During the buyback some States did not allow dealers to purchase unregistered firearms... mainly in the States that already had registration. Tasmania, however allowed purchase of these unregistered firearms.

Section 155(4)
EXEMPTION
I, RICHARD McCREADIE being and as the Commissioner of Police for the State of Tasmania hereby EXEMPT (Pursuant to Section 155(4) of the Firearms Act 1996) all licensed firearms dealers from the provisions of section 25(1) of the Firearms Act which prohibits licensed firearms dealers from purchasing, acquiring or taking possession of firearms from persons not authorised to possess that firearm.
This exemption is subject to the following conditions:-
- The exemption expires on 12 November 1997 but may be withdrawn at any time prior to that date.
- Each dealing under this exemption must be entered in the dealers record as if it were a purchase from a licence holder.
- Any dealer purchasing a firearm under the authority of this exemption must register the firearm within 7 days of its purchase or acquisition by the dealer.
- This exemption may be withdrawn in respect of any individual dealer at any time prior to 12 November 1997 without prior notice and without reason being given.
