Safe and secure

It is up to all responsible firearm owners in Australia to make sure they keep firearms safety and storage in the forefront of their minds. SSAA National takes this subject very seriously and encourages members to do the same. This is why this month we have relaunched our successful and long-running Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport campaign by way of a new gun safe brochure.

The Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport campaign commenced in 1999 with our SSAA clubs promoting safe firearm storage, and in 2005, was expanded to the wider SSAA membership with the first Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport brochure. In 2009, we implemented the National Gun Safe Voucher Program, which was well supported by the firearms industry and was highly commended by the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Brendan O’Connor.

While the program has evolved over time, the message remains the same: The security of each firearm is up to the individual in possession of it and we all need to do the right thing to protect the liberties provided to us in firearm ownership. Firearm owners have enjoyed support from the general public for many years and it is up to us to set a good example. Therefore, if you do not have your firearms properly stored, our strong advice is that you organise correct storage facilities as governed by your state or territory laws.

Accompanying this edition of the Australian Shooter is the new Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport brochure, featuring the latest in firearm storage products. There is a selection of sizes and prices, so there is something to suit everyone. There are no excuses for not following the law and meeting safe storage requirements. If you don’t have the knowledge or skills to install your safe, contact a professional to do it for you.

Not only is the Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport campaign about encouraging SSAA members to be responsible with their firearms storage, it’s also about spreading the word. Do you have mates who need to improve their storage facilities? Now is the time to talk to them about this and perhaps show them your brochure to help them on their way.

If your copy of Australian Shooter did not come with the special Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport brochure or you would like to share the brochure with your mates, please visit www.ssaa.org.au to download a copy.
