Twigg Family Appeal - tragedy brings Nhill community together
A Victorian SSAA branch is banding together with its local community to support a SSAA family who needs their help following a terrible tragedy. In August, a plane crash in the Nhill area of western Victoria took the life of young female shooter Jacinda Twigg and critically injured her mother Julie, who later died as a result of her injuries.
Father Lenny is a keen shooter at SSAA Nhill and has donated countless hours of his time to organise field shoots for Nhill members and the catering needs for the branch. And now that the family is faced with dealing with the loss of a daughter and mother, ongoing medical costs and the need to care full-time for one of his two sons, the local community, including the SSAA Nhill Branch, has banded together.
The Hindmarsh Shire Council has formed the Twigg Family Appeal. SSAA Nhill has already donated $1000 to the cause, and an additional $1305 in profit from a raffle from the SSAA Victoria President’s Evening has been donated. The town is getting right behind the cause too and is holding a Blue Light Dance to help further support Lenny and his sons.
SSAA Nhill Assistant Secretary Graham Blair is a local police officer who was involved in the search for the missing plane and its occupants. He said when something like this happens to a fellow shooting mate, “it hits home hard”.
“The second blow came on the day of Jacinda’s funeral, when we were notified that Julie had succumbed to her injuries and passed away also,” he said. “A really tough time is ahead for this young family.
“I would like you to consider any donation toward a SSAA family who needs help...This battling family needs support and the Nhill Branch members will no doubt assist wherever they can.”
Jacinda used to accompany her father on shoots and Graham said she was becoming an important part of the club. “We will never see this lovely young lady develop now,” he said.
The Twigg family is well known and highly respected in Nhill. Lenny manages the council’s waste transfer station in the town and delivers mail for Australia Post. He also inspects the Nhill aerodrome twice a week to ensure compliance with strict safety standards.
