Japan’s devastating tsunami earlier this year has destroyed paper earmarked for the SSAA’s magazines. Ishinomaki, the country’s largest paper mill in Japan, has up till now manufactured about 800,000 tonnes of paper every year, with around 180,000 tonnes of this paper exported to Australian and New Zealand markets.
As a result of the destruction to the site, future issues of the Australian Shooter will be printed on paper sourced from China for a short period of time, then more permanent stocks from Europe.
The large amount of damage caused to the Ishinomaki mill has stopped operations. However, the Japanese are now focusing on rebuilding the site and the infrastructure in the surrounding area, with plans to recommence construction in mid-2012.
The tsunami that engulfed parts of Japan in March this year followed an 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of northern Japan. International trade in varied sectors has been affected by the damage caused by these natural disasters and it is anticipated the impacts will continue to be revealed as the cleanup continues.
While the paper will be sourced from overseas and the paper may feel different in the hands for the time being, the Australian Shooter will continue to be ‘proudly printed in Australia’ by Webstar.
