February 2011 President message
Lend a hand
After more than 10 years of historical drought, Australia is now facing devastating one-in-100-year floods. These, as you all know, have affected the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, with South Australia also preparing for future down-flows. Cities, towns, homes, businesses, farms and even some of the SSAA’s shooting ranges have been affected, but unfortunately, the worst may still be yet to come, with many states still bracing for further flood events as we speak and over the next few months.
As a community of 130,000 sport shooting and recreational hunting men and women, many of us will have family and friends affected by the floods. Indeed, as many members have already suggested, we must be supporters of each other and lend a hand to those affected where we can. If you can help with either monetary support or labour, we encourage you to visit the Queensland Government’s flood recovery website at www.qld.gov.au/floods Also, as you can imagine, many of our shooting ranges and properties will need volunteers to restore their facilities. If you would like to help, please contact your state or territory SSAA office to inquire.
Many of you will have stories and photographs of your experiences with these floods. If you would like to share these with us, please contact Media Officer Rachael Andrews on media@ssaa.org.au or PO Box 2520, Unley, SA 5061.
Lastly, please note that regardless of the natural disasters, SSAA National is continuing lobbying efforts, both here and abroad, on behalf of our members, and we will continue to bring you updates of these efforts and other news of interest throughout 2011.
