2010 Commonwealth Games Australian Shooting Team results

Australia’s top shooters have taken home a number of Commonwealth Games medals in the shooting events of this year’s Games in New Delhi, India. Thirty shooters were selected as a part of the Australian Team to take part in 36 events where 108 medals could be won. The shooting events began on October 9 and ran until October 13.

Tuesday, October 5
The first day of shooting for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held events for the Women’s Pairs 25m Pistol, Men’s Pairs 50m Pistol, Men’s Pairs 10m Air Rifle and Women’s Pairs 50m Rifle 3 Position.
Australia’s first shooting medals for the Games came from 25m Pistol shooting pair Lalita Yauhleuskaya and Linda Ryan, who were awarded with silver medals for their efforts.

Wednesday, October 6
Events in Women’s 25m Pistol, Men’s 50m Pistol, Men’s Pairs Double Trap and Men’s 10m Air Rifle filled the schedule for the second day of shooting events. Unfortunately, Australia did not medal in any of these events, with India, Malaysia, Singapore and England the only successful countries to place on this day.

Thursday, October 7
Four gold medals were up for grabs on the third day of shooting in the Men’s Pairs 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Position, Men’s Pairs 10m Air Pistol and Men’s Double Trap shoots, with Australia taking out one of them.
Australia’s Bruce Quick and David Chapman won bronze medals in the Pairs 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. Bruce is now the fifth athlete to win 14 medals at the Commonwealth Games.
However, the big success story of the day was young Alethea Sedgman, who, after putting pressure on herself after being disappointed with her standing score in the qualifying round, persevered through to take home a gold medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position event.

Friday, October 8
Shooters were met with a busy day of five shooting events, including the Men’s Pairs 50m Rifle 3 Position, Men’s Pairs Trap, Women’s Pairs Trap, Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol and Men’s 10m Air Pistol. The Australian Team managed a place in three events.
Australian pair Will Godward and Benjamin Burge were just outside of the top three when they finished 5th in the Pairs 50m Rifle 3 Position.
However, Trap shooters Laetisha Scanlan and Stacy Roiall had much more success in their Pairs Trap event, winning a gold medal over England (silver) and Canada (bronze) with a score of 93 out of a possible 100.
Not to be outdone were Michael Diamond and Adam Vella, who won a gold medal in the Pairs Trap in a close competition with India (silver) and England (bronze), scoring 198, 197 and 193 respectively.
In the final event of the day, the 10m Air Pistol, Daniel Repacholi won a bronze medal for his efforts.

Saturday, October 9
Australia failed to take home a medal on the sixth day of shooting, missing out on chances in the Women’s Pairs 10m Air Rifle, Men’s Pairs 25m Centrefire Pistol and Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Position.

Sunday, October 10
The Men’s 25m Centrefire Pistol, Women’s 10m Air Rifle, Men’s Trap and Women’s Trap events were held today.
Michael Diamond won his second medal for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in his Trap event. His score of 146 allowed him to finish in second place, receiving a silver medal, behind English competitor Aaron Heading on 147. Adam Vella was not far out of the running for a medal, placing fourth following a shoot-off with India.

Monday, October 11
The Men’s Pairs Skeet and Women’s Pairs 50m Rifle Prone events were held on the seventh day of competition, but Australia fell outside of the top three in both.

Tuesday, October 12
Events were held for the Women’s Pairs 10m Air Pistol, Men’s Pair 25m Standard Pistol, Women’s 50m Rifle Prone and Men’s Pairs 50m Rifle Prone, with Australia medalling in two of these.
Dina Aspandiyarova and Pamela McKenzie won silver medals in the Pairs 10m Air Pistol, and David Clifton and Warren Potent won bronze medals in the Pairs 50m Rifle Prone.

Wednesday, October 13
Six medals were available in the final day of shooting at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the Men’s 25m Standard Pistol, Pairs Open Full Bore 1000 yards, Women’s 10m Air Pistol, Men;s 50m Rifle Prone, Open Full Bore 1000 yards and Men’s Skeet.
Dina Aspandiyarova did Australia proud in the 10m Air Pistol event, winning a bronze medal, after Malaysia and India respectively.
While James Corbett and Geoffrey Grenfell placed 14th in the Pairs Full Bore 1000 yards event, Corbett secured a silver medal in the single event.
Warren Potent too won a silver medal in his 50m Rifle Prone competition.
