May 2009 President message
This month, we have launched SSAA’s Comprehensive Guide to Shooting and Hunting in Australia. This 140-page publication is an introduction to the SSAA, firearms, the shooting sports and recreational hunting and aims to continue to revive many of Australia’s sport shooting traditions.
While the publication encompasses many aspects of Australia’s shooting sports, it is somewhat of an introductory guide. SSAA National particularly wanted to use the publication as a tool to reach out to new shooters and widen the scope in recruiting new junior members. To this end, the guide will be sold through newsagencies across Australia.
Produced with the cooperation of our shooting competition chairmen and women, the Comprehensive Guide showcases more than a dozen of the SSAA’s popular shooting competitions and provides details for readers to learn how to get out there and have a go. It also features three important sections on how to safely handle rifles, shotguns and handguns and tips for mastering various shooting positions and techniques.
The important and valuable Australian pastime of hunting is well covered in the Comprehensive Guide too, with information about safety, ethics and etiquette in the field, trip planning, field shooting techniques, knowing your target animal and how to choose the right cartridge for the animal. A snapshot of the hunting rules, regulations, licensing and fees for each Australian state and territory is also provided.
No doubt, most SSAA members are well aware of the shooting competitions on offer through the Association and may already be experienced hunters so the Comprehensive Guide may be somewhat too basic for them. However, if you would like to purchase your own copy to browse through or pass on to a shooting mate and potential SSAA member, we have a limited number of the guides on offer at a specially discounted price of $4.95 including postage - that’s nearly half of what you’d pay at the newsagency. This is a special price to our members and covers the actual cost of our printing and mailing it to you - we don’t make any profit on it! Click here to download the order form.
The SSAA’s Comprehensive Guide to Shooting & Hunting in Australia is another tool in our toolkit for spreading the word on recreational shooting and hunting and building on our Association’s strength of numbers.
