July 2007 President message - Game Management course offered at the University of Queensland

Humans have always been hunters and gatherers of wildlife and while much of this has in the past had disastrous results on the environment and game numbers, humans are becoming increasingly thoughtful in their cultivation and use of wildlife. Through careful management based on sustainable use, we have brought back many species from the brink of extinction. We are much more educated about the game we wish to hunt and are scientific in our harvesting and use of game. This science-based sustainable use of wildlife is known as game management.

We have recently been made aware of an exciting new opportunity regarding game management which may interest many hunters, conservationists and students of wildlife science.

‘Game Management: The Science of Sustainable Use’ is a new 12-week certification course offered through the University of Queensland. With examples from Australia and around the world, this course examines the historical and current implementation of game management policies and procedures. It focuses on community ecology and population biology and the social and political context in which game management occurs. Basically, it explains the benefits of educated and organised hunting and harvesting from nature.

This course is undertaken by correspondence and can be studied on its own by anyone with an interest in game management or as a subject incorporated into a wildlife science degree.

We believe this to be the first tertiary-level course of its kind offered at any university in Australia and fully endorse the University of Queensland for adding it to their curriculum.

Places will be limited each year. Those interested should contact Dr Peter Murray at peter.murray@uq.edu.au before July 20, 2007.

SSAA National will offer three bursaries to SSAA members who wish to study the Game Management course. While preference will be given to current students, this is a correspondence course and anyone around Australia is welcome to apply. Those interested can apply to:
