Amendments to the Tasmanian Firearms Act 1996
and Firearms Regulations 2006

Tasmania Police reminds all firearms licence holders of major changes to the firearms laws that were effective from November 2007.

Transportation of Firearms
Licence holders are now required to transport their firearms in a certain manner and must comply with the following:

  • Firearms must be unloaded
  • Ammunition must be stored in a separate closed container and
  • Firearms must comply with ONE of the following
    • be in a locked receptacle; OR
    • have the bolt removed and stored separately to the firearm; OR
    • be fitted with a trigger or action lock.

Failure to comply with these new requirements is an offence under the Firearms Act 1996.
All recent changes to the Firearms Act 1996 and Firearms Regulations 2006 are contained in the Firearms Amendment Bill 2007. This is available on the Tasmania Police website at http://www.police.tas.gov.au/hot_topics/firearms_amendment_bill_2007
