Heartwarming. The Sporting Shooters’ Association has produced a special edition insert in its magazine. The Junior Shooter is designed to “encourage young people to become responsible sports shooters”, Shooters’ Party MLC Roy Smith said. Helpfully, it includes recipes for budding killer/cooks. “After you have been out hunting in the field, get into the kitchen and use your prized game meat in these simple but delicious dishes…” Jerky from wild boar or buffalo is yummy on pizzas and minced Bambi is great in bolognaise. Load your gun and load your dishes.

Are we to take it that Kerry-Anne Walsh and Lisa Carty are vegetarians? Their snide comments regarding teaching young sports shooters and hunters to make use of their prey ‘Ready, aim, fire!’ on May 18 seems to suggest it is wrong to encourage the young to take up the shooting sports, hunt and, gasp, cook. I assume fishing is a dark art too?
No doubt when the gold medals roll in from our shooters at the coming Olympics, media commentators will have a temporary change of heart. I wonder how those shooters became so skilled at their art? Maybe they started young.
