Kangaroo numbers affecting stock farmers
ABC1 (Perth), ABC News, 15/05/2008 07:14pm
South-west conservationists in the district of Capel say the Kangaroo population is devastating the local farmland and forest. Alison Dunkley, Capel cattle farmer, says the kangaroos eat all her grass.
Greg Mair, Department of Environment and Conservation, says the Tree Change Phenomenon and the agricultural land have made conditions favourable for kangaroo breeding.
Bronwyn Mutton, Capel Land and Conservation District Committee, is concerned about devastation to vegetation and a thousand kangaroos need to disappear.
The Department admits there is a problem and will work with shooters.
Barry Bell, a professional kangaroo shooter, says with escalating costs, shooters are moving out of the area.
The WA Farmers Federation says cattle and dairy farmers are struggling.
