NSW Shooters’ Party interview about possible amendments to Firearms Act

ABC Central West NSW (Orange), Mornings, 18/06/2008 10:07am

Interview with Roy Smith, MLC of the Shooters’ Party, about the possible amendments they want to make to the Firearms Act. Smith say the main things they want to change are the 28-day waiting period requirement for those who have obtained a license for a firearm and access to shooting ranges for people who want to try the sport. Smith doesn’t agree with the waiting period as these people have already been approved. Smith also says there are too many barriers people have to pass through before they can experience shooting. He says that there is no risk to public safety on a shooting range because there will be licensed supervisors. Smith believes that dealers should be able to send firearms to other dealers using registered post in NSW, while still being delivered in person. Smith dismisses Greens MP Sylvia Hale’s suggestion that a deal was done over the shooting legislation in regard to getting votes to push the planning Bill through. He says that the shooting legislation has been on the cards for many years and the timing is coincidental. He says that the Police Minister is supporting some aspects of the Bill but not others.
