SSAA SA comments on sport shooting and The Junior Shooter

BC North & West SA (Port Pirie), Breakfast, 11/06/2008 07:24am

Compere Andrew Male says there is a lot of negative publicity about firearms and guns and it is rare that people think about some of the more positive aspects of shooting as a sport. Steve Nicholls from the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SA) says a huge cross-section of people are members of the organisation and with current firearms legislation gun ownership is strictly controlled. He says within the SSAA some are more target shooting orientated, but there is also a Hunting & Conservation Branch, which is involved with culling feral animals in national parks and also conservation work, which is carried out through the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby Foundation, etc. Male says the feral goat control programs in the national parks seem to take up quite a bit of time, but they are very effective. He says The Junior Shooter is a supplement to the Australian Shooter. Nicholls says shooting is one of the few sports in which every member of the family can compete on an equal level. He says there are 4000 shooters in the SA branch of the SSAA. Visit www.ssaa.org.au for information.
