Victoria Police comments on new police firearms

3AW (Melbourne), Mornings, 06/06/2008 10:18am

Christine Nixon, Chief Commissioner, Victorian Police, has called in to discuss the recent announcement that the Victoria Police officers will be armed with semi-automatic guns within six months. She says she was not keen on the idea, but her advisory committee of experts including different kinds of stakeholders met about it and came to her with their decision, and so now she has announced the decision. She says there will probably about 6500 guns ordered by stations and it is now a business matter. Nixon is not sure yet whether the Victorian Government's $10m funding will cover the costs of the guns as she is not sure what the suppliers will quote and what the cost of training will be. She says they are on track to have them in use within six months. Nixon says generally the old guns are sold back to manufacturers as part of the sale deal, and they will probably be sent overseen. Nixon says the taser shave been deemed unsuitable to introduce to all officers, but this could be reviewed again later. Nixon is comfortable with the decision for the new guns
