Victoria Police Association comments on new police firearms

ABC 774 Melbourne (Melbourne), Mornings, 06/06/2008 10:36am

Compere Jon Faine speaks with Paul Mullett, Victorian Police Association, about Christine Nixon agreeing to reequip Victoria Police with semi-automatic weapons. Mullett thinks this announcement is a victory for common sense. Mullett describes the decision as a 'no brainer.' Mullett explains that the job of the Police Association now will be to monitor the transition from the revolver to the semi-automatic pistol. According to Mullett the semi-automatic pistol is a safer and more modern weapon. Mullett mentions that the current revolver goes back to Gallipoli days. Mullett says the Smith & Wesson has a new design of semi-automatic. Mullett reveals that he does not like guns personally. Mullett thinks we have to be realistic that members working on the streets confront all situations while on duty where people and crooks are armed with superior weapons. Mullett says he would have no difficulty doing the training.
