Insuring your livestock and working dogs
John has $500,000 worth of livestock on his 10,000-acre property. Like most Australian farmers, John is struggling with the effects of the drought. However, last month saw the culmination of the perils of living through months of a drought. A brief electrical storm caused a bushfire on his property. Amid the chaos of driving the cattle out of harm’s way and containing the fire, 20 of John’s cattle became trapped. John, his staff and the CFS could do nothing, but watch. When they were able to get the fire under control, John found that all of the 20 animals were either dead or dying. He did what any responsible farmer would do: he grabbed his rifle and made sure that the animals did not suffer any more than they already had.
That was a sad day for John. Not only did he witness a tragic event, he also lost a fair bit of revenue due to the fire. Fortunately for John, he had a Farm Pack Policy with Livestock and Working Dog cover through SSAA Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd. This meant that John would receive compensation for the loss of his cattle.
The Livestock and Working Dog section of the policy provides death cover for livestock and working dogs (excluding domestic pets) that may die due to fire, lightning, explosion or earthquake and impact by any vehicle or aircraft. Working dogs are covered for death by any accident. The location of the cover includes the farm, on agistment, on a public road or public land, at a saleyard or breeder’s property or while the animal is on exhibition. (However, animals straying from unfenced land or open pasture is an exclusion under the policy.) Death includes destruction that is necessary for humane reasons, such as in John’s situation. If, as a result of fire, insured livestock used for milk production or breeding are not able to yield milk, the insurer will pay the loss of the value of the livestock. Under this policy, veterinary expenses are limited to 20 per cent of the value of the animal.
