5-Stand NSW State Titles 2008
21-22 June 2008
Sydney International Shooting Centre

Cecil Park CTC proved to be an excellent venue for the SSAA (NSW) 2008 5-Stand State Titles on 21-22 June. Shooting in fine but windy conditions four 5-Stand layouts had been prepared for the 200 target event. Vince Gatt, President CPCTC and his members worked hard to prepare three of the layouts while SSAA provided the fourth with their shotgun trailer. Three layouts operated to SSAA 5-Stand rules presenting known targets in a random order, while the computerised club layout presented known targets. Across the four layouts there was an excellent variety of challenging targets including modified DTL and skeet targets, loopers, battues, rabbits, incomers and crossers.

Competitors came from Newcastle, Mudgee, Wallerawang, Griffith, Wollongong and the Sydney area. Attendances were down from previous years and this was attributed to escalating fuel and ammunition costs.

The shoot was generously sponsored by Milperra Marketing with EXPRESS Cartridges, and Casella Wines makers of Yellow Tail wines. All winners also received SSAA (NSW) State medallions and items of SSAA merchandise. All SSAA members received a special SSAA badge to commemorate SSAA's 60th Anniversary this year.

Two 25 breaks were achieved during the shoot by Newcastle shooters Kevin Raymond and Dean Delaney. This was a very credible achievement given the degree of difficulty of the targets and gusty wind conditions.

Overall winner and 2008 SSAA (NSW) 5-Stand State Champion was Kevin Raymond (Newcastle) with a top score of 167/200.

Frank Scambellone (Sydney) won AA Grade with 153.

In A Grade, Dean Delaney (Newcastle) was first after a shoot off with Steven Newcombe (Sydney) 164, with Michael Ling (Newcastle) third with 160.

Andrew Webb (Wallerawang) top scored in B Grade with 140, followed by Theo Lionatos (Sydney) 132 and Greg Taylor (Sydney) 116.

In C Grade Robert Briscas (Sydney) was first with 141, followed by Geoff Kassianou (Sydney) 129 and Mario Carta (Sydney) 121.

David Douglas (Newcastle) was the top Under 18 Junior with an excellent score of 118, while Matt Pryce (Newcastle) claimed the Under 15 Junior position with a very capable score of 90.

In the Veterans, John Nichols (Mudgee) was first with 148, followed very closely by David Brenton (Wollongong) 147 and Doug Brenton (Sydney) 138.

At the conclusion of the shooting, points were tallied from the State Selection Shoots earlier this year and the State Titles with the following five competitors crowned as the 2008 SSAA (NSW) State Shotgun Team:  Steven Newcombe, Kevin Raymond, Grant Powell, Dean Delaney and Frank Scambellone.
