2nd Selection Shoot
With perfect weather for a shoot, the Griffith Branch staged the second NSW 5 Stand State Selection Shoot at the Griffith Field and Game Club on 30 March. Many of the top sporting clay shooters from around NSW and Victoria attended to secure points towards selection in the NSW SSAA Shotgun Team.

Thirty four competitors attended from Sydney, Deniliquin, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst, Barham, Bermagui and northern Victoria as well as from many local areas. They found the targets from the two 5-Stand layouts, established in bushland at the club, to be very shootable but quite challenging. While many competitors managed to break more than twenty targets per round, no one was able to achieve a possible of 25 targets.

Overall winner was Griffith shooter Doug Osbourne with a very credible top score of 90/100.

Griffith shooter Shaun Krzus was 1st in A Grade with 88, followed by Marty Seymour (Victoria) 86 and Barti Brighenti (Griffith) 83.

In B Grade Michael Scarfone (Griffith) was 1st with 72, followed by Claude Beltrame (Griffith) 71 and Brian Norris (Deniliquin) 69.

Col O'Brien from Bermagui was 1st in C Grade with 69, followed by Stacey Rossetto (Griffith) after a shoot off with Don Picolo (Tullibegeal) 68.

In the Veterans section Trevor Smith (Barham) was first with 78, followed by Max Cavanagh (Wagga Wagga) 77 and Alec Ceccato (Griffith) 75.

Zac Norris (Deniliquin), an up and coming young shooter,  won the Junior section with an excellent score of 80.

The shoot was generously supported by Casella Wines, EXPRESS Cartridges, Codemo Machinery and the NSW Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, while local SSAA members Andrew Bean and Lance Hicken served a very tasty BBQ during the shoot. The success of the shoot was greatly assisted by the contribution made by the Field and Game Club and some of its members.

3rd Selection Shoot
The Sydney Clay Target Club hosted a weekend of 5-Stand Shooting on 12/13 April to introduce the event to club members and to stage the final SSAA 5-Stand State Selection Shoot for 2008. Members Craig Tilley and Tony Salem assisted by others set up two excellent 5-Stand layouts using club traps and others kindly lent from the nearby F & G Club. A third layout was provided by SSAA's 5-Stand Trailer which was set up and operated capably by Trailer Manager, John Nichols.

Craig designed the layouts to present an excellent variety of targets with varying degrees of hardness that were suitable for beginners but also challenged the more experienced competitors. A fast crossing, low flying pair of midis on one layout were very hittable, but proved to be the undoing of many competitors. Those many competitors that experienced 5-Stand for the first time, all reported having a very enjoyable weekend, even though they had difficulty breaking some of the more unusual targets.

The State Selection Shoot comprised 75 targets with 38 competitors vying for points towards inclusion in the NSW SSAA Shotgun Team. Competitors attended from around Sydney, Newcastle, Wallerawang, Griffith, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands.

Overall winner was Wallsend shooter, Kevin Raymond with a very credible top score of 66/75.

Frank Scambollone (Sydney) topped AA Grade with 58.

In A Grade Dean Delaney (Rathmines) was 1st after a shootoff with Steve Newcombe (Sydney) 65, followed by Craig Tilley (Sydney) 61.

In B Grade Domenic Cardillo (Wollongong) 54 just edged out Tas Psarakis (Sydney) 53 and Terry Burgess (Sydney) 49.

Sydney shooters cleaned up in C grade with Greg Taylor 54, Robert Briscas 52, and Man Poon 43 after a shoot off with Les Trew.

The top junior was Bradley Salem (Sydney) 40, followed by Matthew Pryce (Rathmines) 36 and Matthew Salem (Sydney) 34. Given that these juniors are beginners at 5-Stand their scores were excellent achievements and we can expect to see more of them at future shoots.

Warren Brown (Griffith) 50 managed first place in Veterans, followed by Jim Perry (Sydney) 45 and Bill Shelton (Sydney) 23.

The organisation of the shoot was generously supported by club members, particularly Craig Tilley, Tony Salem and Mal and Carol Tilley. Pam handled the office duties very efficiently while Sue provided some delicious catering over the weekend. The shoot was generously sponsored by EXPRESS Cartridges, Casella Wines and SSAA (NSW) provided medallions for all place getters. SSAA (NSW) Discipline Chairman, Richard Gawned officiated at the Presentation Ceremony.

The NSW State Titles are scheduled to be held at the Cecil Park CTC at the Sydney International Shooting Centre on 21/22 June.
