The sixth annual Junior Interstate Challenge was held over the weekend of October 6 and 7 at the Majura Range in Canberra and was attended by 40 young shooters. In past years it has been hosted by Springvale (Victoria), Batemans Bay (NSW) and SSAA (ACT). The first challenge was organised by Ken Latter of the Junior Development Section, SSAA (ACT) in 2001.

Shooters came from Queensland, NSW, ACT, Victoria and SA. The strongest contingent was from Victoria with 14 shooters. Two South Australians came from Coober Pedy and one NSW shooter came from Port Macquarie.

The Junior Champion was Daniel Ison from Batemans Bay (NSW). Shooters 18 years and older are excluded from this award.

Shooters scored particularly well in both Field Rifle events: Field Rifle and 3 Positional, with many shooters scoring personal bests and several shooters qualifying for awards. The Rifle Metallic Silhouette had two exciting shoot-offs. Baden Butler (Vic) and Iain True (ACT) had a shoot-off for first in the 18 to 24 age group, which went for 15 rounds and was eventually won by Baden. Allison Jelleff and Elijah McCrae, both from Victoria, had a shoot-off for third in the Under 15 age group, which was won by Allison.

The dinner on Saturday night was attended by more than 60 people.

Of course an event of this magnitude does not happen without a lot of helpers. In this case, there were helpers in many capacities:
Equipment loan: Doug Lawrie for Field Rifle targets and set-up equipment; Dave True for Rifle Metallic Silhouette targets, range commands CD and equipment; and the Executive Committee of SSAA (ACT) for the use of the main range and main clubhouse and facilities.
Range officers: led by Alex Brace with Darius Krivanek (SSAA National Coordinator of Field Rifle); Kaye McIntyre (SSAA ACT President); Doug Lawrie (SSAA ACT Captain of Field Rifle); Ken Latter; Wendy Whisker; Peter Churchill; Keith Byfield; Michael Campion and David McCrae.
Protest Committee: Darius Krivanek (Day 1 ACT): Alex Brace (Day 2 ACT); Tim Spedding (Qld): Tom Cerny (Victoria); Greg Ison (NSW) and John Didonna (SA).
Scoring: led by Mary Bingham and assisted by Wendy Whisker and her computer, with Sue Latter; Margaret Cerny; Kay Schiesser; Sandra Madler-Edwards; Keith Byfield; Shane Withers; Martin Collis; Tim Golder and Deborah Johnston.
Canteen and dinner catering: led by Roger Leach, with Shane Withers; Brian Walker; Lachlan Schubert and David Voss.
Target crew, set-up and general help: Bob Vine; Paul Pisciotta; Greg Ison and Richard Marshall.
